What follows is a scene from my new book, which will almost certainly be titled The Page of Cups, to be printed in time to sell at VanCAF in Vancouver, BC on May 18 and 19. My first attempt to approximate John le Carré writing fantasy, it’s a supernatural mystery about a young fellow of the Occult Society — a secretive organization about which I will reveal no further details at this time — who takes up a post as a kind of civic magician to a village on the Suffolk coast. The mistrust of the community — and the bizarre circumstances of his predecessor’s death — force him to question his vocation and the institution to which he’s devoted his life.
This is the first completely new thing that I’ve started in ten years or so, and it’s my first real attempt to write a complete coherent story that has both a beginning and an end (this book will be the first of two parts). So I hope you like it, and I really hope I can get it finished.
Looking forward to this!
This is amazing; can’t wait to see where you take it; I don’t know if I’m misinterpreting but I’m getting a feeling like ‘Professor Layton meets Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’. I was rereading The City a few days ago — I missed that #4 is out. Purchasing posthaste!
